Gideon Malherbe: General Director
Gideon is the General Director of Bloemendal Addiction Treatment where his role is the financial management and the management of the accommodation and property.
Gideon was educated at the University of Stellenbosch where he received a B. Agricultural Management degree in 1991.
He has been managing Bloemendal farms since 1992 and in 2005 built 7 guesthouses on Bloemendal and in 2009 built the Paddabult Country House and ran it as a 4 star boutique hotel and conference facility, which now forms the main accommodation for clients.
In 2011 Gideon started renting the Country House and other buildings to an Addiction Treatment facility.
In June 2012 he started Bloemendal Addiction Treatment with partners and he is now a director.
Gideon also runs the agriculture part of the farm, since Bloemendal is a working farm, notably for lemons and grapes.
Gideon has a love for nature and has varied interests including clay pigeon shooting, for which he has SA national colours; mountain biking; photography and reading.
Of note is that Gideon was born on Bloemendal farms and grew up there, thus his great care and love for the historic property.
Marianda Eras: Clinical Director and Clinical Psychologist
Marianda is the Clinical Director of Bloemendal Addiction Treatment where she heads the whole team and is responsible for the development of the treatment programme, policies and procedures and oversees the clinical and therapeutic treatment processes.
She was educated at the University of Stellenbosch and received her M.A. (Clin.Psych.) degree in 1996 and is registered as a Clinical Psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. She is also officially registered as a GZ-psychologist in the Netherlands.
Marianda has many years of experience in private practice with adult psychotherapy and 17 years of experience in working with addictions in clinical settings. She has been in the position of clinical director of addiction treatment clinics for the last 6 years. She was a supervisor for many psychologists and counsellors over the years, as well as for teams.
She was a treatment professional for the National Responsible Gambling Programme for 10 years, specializing in the treatment of pathological gambling. She was also the team psychologist of an Eating Disorders Unit.
Marianda has a passion for a holistic and inclusive approaches to treatment and therapy, especially applying this to the treatment of addiction.
She has a keen interest in the area of metaphysics and transformational processes.
Susan Rabe: Psychiatrist
Dr. Susan Rabe is the consultant psychiatrist on the team. She assesses and treats clients who require psychiatric care during the treatment.
Dr. Rabe qualified as a Medical Doctor and received her MB.ChB degree from the University of Stellenbosch in 1985. She completed her education as Psychiatrist at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1994 and received her M.Med.(Psych) degree. She received her F.C.Psych (SA) degree in 1995 from the College of Physicians (SA).
Dr. Rabe does formal consultations at Bloemendal Addiction Treatment once a week and more when required in acute cases. Dr. Rabe has many years of experience as psychiatrist working in private practice and in psychiatric hospitals.
Christelle Hamman: Medical Practitioner
Dr. Christelle Hamman works as the Medical Practitioner on the team, assessing all clients after admission regarding their medical status. She continues to consult clients who need medical care during their stay in treatment.
Dr. Hamman was educated at the University of Pretoria and received her MB.ChB degree in 1993. She also received a diploma from the College of Physicians of South Africa in Aneasthetics in 1997.
She runs a large medical practice and is a partner in MediCross Paarl.
She has been working in the field of Addiction since 2011.
Marga Roets: Clinical Psychologist
Marga works as a psychologist on the treatment team and does individual case management and psychotherapy, as well as group therapy with clients. She obtained her MSc (Clinical Psychology) degree from the University of the Free State in 2010 and is registered as a Clinical Psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. She also has a Post Graduate Certificate in Education and has worked in the field of Education.
Marga has broad clinical experience in child, adolescent and adult psychotherapy, group therapy and forensic psychology. She has previously worked in an addiction treatment clinic.
Marga has a passion for working with people and in her free time is a keen runner, having completed various marathons and ultra-marathons.
Tanya van der Spuy: Clinical Psychologist
Tanya works as a clinical psychologist on the treatment team and does individual case management and psychotherapy with clients.
She holds a law degree from the University of Cape Town and received her Masters degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Stellenbosch in 2002. She is registered as a Clinical Psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.
Tanya has experience in individual psychotherapy with young children, adolescents and adults in the private practice setting. She brings this psychotherapeutic experience with her in working with people suffering from addictions, which she finds an exciting challenge.
Tanya works within a holistic framework and has a special interest in the use of creative and art media in psychotherapy.
Rachel Barbour: Clinical Psychologist
Rachel is a registered clinical psychologist on the Bloemendal Addiction Treatment team, providing individual psychotherapy and case management as well as facilitating group art therapy sessions.
She returned to university to do her clinical training in her early 30s after a decade working as an advertising copywriter with degrees in English Literature and Journalism. Rachel qualified from Rhodes University in 2004 with an M.A. in Clinical Psychology and has gained experience in state hospitals, NGO's, private hospitals, and private practice. In the last, she worked with recovering addicts once they had entered step-down care or returned home and brings this experience to working in an inpatient addiction treatment setting.
Rachel is a flexible and integrative psychotherapist and is most influenced by the needs of the person with whom she works as well as by her interest in psychodynamic, existential, and expressive psychotherapies.
Anina van der Walt: Clinical Psychologist
Anina completed her MA in Clinical Psychology through the University of Johannesburg in 2010 and is currently registered as a Clinical Psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. She also has a Post Graduate Certificate in Education and has worked in secondary and tertiary educational settings as teacher and psychology lecturer.
Having worked in various psychiatric hospitals she gained experience in both child and adult psychiatry and also worked within an addiction treatment unit at a private psychiatric clinic. At Bloemendal she works as a psychologist on the treatment team and does individual case management and psychotherapy, as well as group therapy with clients. Anina works from an integrative paradigm, which is mainly informed by systemic and insight-oriented theoretical orientations.
She seeks to form authentic and trusting relationships with her clients and draws on her background in the expressive arts to assist clients in gaining insight and making meaning of their lives and the role their addiction plays in it. In her free time she spends much time hiking or practicing yoga.
Ilaam Retief: Staff Nurse
Ilaam is a Staff Nurse on the Bloemendal team. She was qualified as an enrolled nurse at Netcare College in 2011 and is registered with the South African Nursing Council.
Ilaam has previous experience working as a nurse in an addiction treatment facility.
Junia Meissenheimer: Staff Nurse
Junia works as a Staff Nurse on the Bloemendal team. She has a diploma in General Nursing and is registered as an Enrolled Nurse with the South African Nursing Council. She has many years experience having worked at various state and private hospitals.
John Louw: Recovery Assistant Manager and Recovery Counsellor
John works as the manager of the Recovery Assistant team, who supervise and guide clients with various activities when they are not actively engaged in treatment sessions. He also has the position of Recovery Counsellor on the team. In this regard he assists patients to explore and understand the nature of recovery in the context of the Minnesota Model, based on extensive knowledge and experience in the 12-step fellowship. He also conducts Big book studies and arranges guest speakers from the various 12-step fellowships.
John completed the certificate in Counselling Psychology (NQF level 5) at the Cornerstone Institute.
He worked as a Life-line counsellor for 7 years.
He participated in the ‘Motivational Interviewing Winter School Programme’ at the University of the Western Cape.
His experience includes working as a part-time Recovery Assistant since 1997 and Addictions Counsellor for 2 years at one of the leading Addiction Treatment Centres in South Africa.
He currently participates in the Group Psychotherapy Experience and Training Programme run by CGAS (Centre for Group Analytical Studies).
John is a 12-step recovering alcoholic since 1997, and therefore has personal experience with addictions, the treatment thereof and the application of the 12-step principles.
He has a passion for working with people suffering from addictions and the reward of seeing people recover.
Jenaine van der Fort: Recovery Assistant
Jenaine works as a Recovery Assistant supervising and guiding clients with various activities when they are not actively engaged in treatment sessions.
Elsabe Lettenga: Fitness Instructor
Elsabe is the fitness instructor at Bloemendal and supervises and guides all clients in physical training during their stay.
Elsabe completed a B.A. degree in Sport Science, specializing in Personal Fitness trainer, at the University of Stellenbosch in 2009. She completed a B.Hons degree in Child Kinetics in 2010.
She completed courses in the following: Field Hockey; Pilates Instructor (NQF Level 5); Personal Training; Aqua Aerobics; Aerobics (Step, Body toning); First Aid.
Elsabe worked at the University of Stellenbosch High Performance gym as a floor instructor and as a Pilates Group and Individual instructor.
She has been working as fitness instructor in Addiction treatment since 2011 and still works as Pilates instructor at various training studios.
Elsabe has a passion for making her fitness classes enjoyable and to encourage a positive personal experience in clients as to enhance their confidence.
